Highway 1 is now entirely a motorway
Highway 1 between Turku and Helsinki is now entirely a motorway. The 50-kilometre section from Muurla to Lohja has been made into a safe motorway that fits in well with its surroundings. The new motorway went into operation in two phases. The section between Muurla-Lahnajärvi was opened for traffic in November 2008 and from Lahnajärvi to Lohja was opened in January 2009.
The first motorway section of Highway 1 was completed in the 1960s. Construction resumed in the 1990s and since then three new motorway sections have been built. Now that the motorway from Muurla to Lohja has been completed, the entire highway between Turku and Helsinki is a motorway.
